·       Announcement was made that Tournament #1, March 13, 2010, at Banner Marsh, Main Access, is cancelled due to ice still on the lake. It is anticipated that the lake will be ready by our next tournament.

·       Students were reminded of what equipment to bring for the March 20, 2010, fishing tournament (pfd, eye protection, rods, reels, fishing box, and fishing license (if 16).

·       T-shirt sizes were collected from members to complete the distribution of team uniforms. Several T-shirts will need to be printed and will be distributed at the next club meeting.

·       Discussion was held as to the type of uniform to be worn at Sectional/State competition. It was agreed that a pocketed fishing shirt would be looked into, along with our school name and logo embroidered on them.

·       Volunteer workers were solicited to help at the Lake Camelot Sportsman Club Fish Fry. Workers would help bus tables and due clean-up. A sign-up sheet was passed around.

·       IBF membership cards were distributed to club members present.

·       Boat assignment and partner pairing sheet was reviewed and modified, where necessary, in preparation for the next bass tournament.

·       Discussion was given to whether club is interested in inter-scholastic completion with other IHSA member schools. This was precipitated from a communication from Galva High School regarding an invitation to hold a bass tournament with each other. It was general consensus that we were interested, especially during the summer and fall. Contact will be made to see what can be worked out.

Casting practice included competition on casting accuracy among members.

Boat Captain - Responsibilities

March 7, 2010 by dgarmon · Comments Off

Thank you for contributing your time and equipment to help make this a most successful year for our bass fishing club. I hope that you find this a rewarding activity for both you and the young anglers who will be sharing your boat. Below, I have tried to provide you some guidance as to what your responsibilities will be. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the bass fishing club sponsor listed at the bottom of the page.

·     Your boat needs to meet all USCG requirements. If in doubt, we will be happy to perform a boat inspection. Safety is our ultimate consideration and concern.

·     For your protection, and ours, you must be able to show that you have liability and medical insurance coverage. It is recommended that you carry proof of coverage in your boat at all times. All Illini Bluffs Club Members (students) are members of the Illinois Bass Federation, and therefore carry supplemental coverage…your insurance carrier remains as primary! If you do not have up-to-date insurance on both your tow vehicle and boat, please contact the tournament director listed at the bottom of this page.

·     You control what events occur on your boat! You are the clock-watcher. Do not allow students to start early or be late for weigh-ins. Don’t allow students to spend too much time fishing in an unproductive area.

·     Only the boat captain is allowed to operate the outboard motor. Speed limits are no greater than 35 mph, unless restricted by the lake you are fishing. All “rules of the lake” will be in effect, including horsepower, number of legal fish, and size/slot limits.

·     All people in the boat (students and boat captains) must wear a pfd (personal floatation device) 100 % of the time they are on the water. Student fishermen are allowed to operate the electric trolling motor unless the boat captain wishes them not to due to safety concerns or protection of the boat. Only two student participants (of a possible four) are allowed to fish at the same time. I recommend that you rotate among students and fishing positions every hour or two. In addition, IBHS district rule is that all students are to wear eye protection while on the boat.

·    Boat captains are observers and do not fish, but may coach and give suggestions. Boat captains cannot assist in hooking, landing a fish, or tying on a lure. A student angler may assist. (A boat captain may net a fish if only one student is in the boat and the student personally requests assistance).

·     Students must only use the gear that is in the boat when the boat leaves the dock at the start of the day. They may use their own gear or the gear of the captain in the boat.

·     No live bait or trolling is allowed. Do not allow students to drag their lures in the water as you move to new locations.

·     Students and boat captains may not wear apparel that advertises or promotes the sale of fishing products. Participants may wear uniforms with district/school identification/name. Boats may display advertisements and/or graphics.

·     Students must stay completely in the boat unless they are using an authorized rest room or they are back at the dock-switching participants.

·     Unsportsmanship Conduct – Managers and officials have the strictest instructions to disqualify any participant, coach, boat captain, and/or other person guilty of profane or indecent language or of gross unsportsmanlike conduct. Fines may be levied against disqualified schools. Smoking and alcoholic beverages are not allowed.

·     Know what type of tournament you are participating in! Some tournaments will be “paper” tournaments in which the length of the fish are measured and recorded, with the fish being returned to the lake as quickly as possible. In other tournaments, fish may be kept and placed in the live-well to be weighed in at the conclusion of the tournament. In all tournaments, minimum length of fish is 12” and longer to count. Fish may be culled from the live well once 5 fish have been caught.
