Tournament #2, March 20, 2010
Who: Illini Bluffs Community School District 327 – Bass Club Members
What: This fishing tournament is designed to give some experience to IBHS Bass Club
members interested in participating in the upcoming IHSA fishing tournaments in the spring.
When: Saturday, March 20, 2010 (Event will be cancelled if lightning and/or freezing conditions exist)
Where: Banner Marsh, Main Access
Schedule of Events:
Launching of boats: 10:30 am
Tournament Fishing: 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
Awards Ceremony: 4:15 pm
Guidelines and Restrictions:
§ In this tournament, total sum of longest 5 bass caught will determine winners. Recognition will be given to the top three boats. A single award for longest bass caught will also be given. No fish are to go into a live-well and all will be returned to the lake as soon as length measurement is completed. Boat captains will be responsible to verify and record length to nearest 1/4 inch onto log sheet. This is what is referred to as a “paper tournament”! It is recommended to use the Golden Rule Bumper Board to be uniform in measurements.
§ Banner Marsh allows 3 fish possession per angler. Ordinarily, 12”-18” fish are protected slot length limit (no possession)…fish in this category must be returned to the lake immediately! Both largemouth and smallmouth bass are allowed (no striped bass). For the sake of this tournament, only fish over 10” will qualify to be weighed or measured for length.
§ Engine restriction to 25 hp and under. Engines greater than 25 hp may use outboards only when loading onto trailers. Observe no-wake where posted and near boat ramp.
§ We would like the student anglers to operate the electric trolling motor, however, that decision is that of the boat captain. If you are concerned regarding potential damage to the boat, the boat captain needs to operate the trolling motor.
§ Only artificial bait is allowed. No live bait or trolling! Please maintain 50 yards from other boats.
§ All people in the boat must wear PFD’s at all times. Students must also wear eye protection and no open-toe shoes are allowed.
§ All fish must be caught from the boat during the official tournament time limit.
§ The adult observer (boat captain) must run the outboard motor and may give advice, but may not assist in the catching or landing of any fish to be weighed in for the tournament.
§ Boat captains, please complete the fish caught log sheet and turn-in at end of tournament.
§ All equipment and lures must be in the boat at the start of the tournament. Students may use boat captain’s equipment/lures, if allowed by boat captain.

Tournament #1, March 13, 2010, Cancelled
Due to ice still on the lake, the IBHS Bass Tournament scheduled for March 13, 2010, at Banner Marsh, Main Access, has been cancelled. Ice is close to being gone. It is anticipated that the tournament scheduled for March 20 will be held, as planned.
Boat Captain - Responsibilities
Thank you for contributing your time and equipment to help make this a most successful year for our bass fishing club. I hope that you find this a rewarding activity for both you and the young anglers who will be sharing your boat. Below, I have tried to provide you some guidance as to what your responsibilities will be. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the bass fishing club sponsor listed at the bottom of the page.
· Your boat needs to meet all USCG requirements. If in doubt, we will be happy to perform a boat inspection. Safety is our ultimate consideration and concern.
· For your protection, and ours, you must be able to show that you have liability and medical insurance coverage. It is recommended that you carry proof of coverage in your boat at all times. All Illini Bluffs Club Members (students) are members of the Illinois Bass Federation, and therefore carry supplemental coverage…your insurance carrier remains as primary! If you do not have up-to-date insurance on both your tow vehicle and boat, please contact the tournament director listed at the bottom of this page.
· You control what events occur on your boat! You are the clock-watcher. Do not allow students to start early or be late for weigh-ins. Don’t allow students to spend too much time fishing in an unproductive area.
· Only the boat captain is allowed to operate the outboard motor. Speed limits are no greater than 35 mph, unless restricted by the lake you are fishing. All “rules of the lake” will be in effect, including horsepower, number of legal fish, and size/slot limits.
· All people in the boat (students and boat captains) must wear a pfd (personal floatation device) 100 % of the time they are on the water. Student fishermen are allowed to operate the electric trolling motor unless the boat captain wishes them not to due to safety concerns or protection of the boat. Only two student participants (of a possible four) are allowed to fish at the same time. I recommend that you rotate among students and fishing positions every hour or two. In addition, IBHS district rule is that all students are to wear eye protection while on the boat.
· Boat captains are observers and do not fish, but may coach and give suggestions. Boat captains cannot assist in hooking, landing a fish, or tying on a lure. A student angler may assist. (A boat captain may net a fish if only one student is in the boat and the student personally requests assistance).
· Students must only use the gear that is in the boat when the boat leaves the dock at the start of the day. They may use their own gear or the gear of the captain in the boat.
· No live bait or trolling is allowed. Do not allow students to drag their lures in the water as you move to new locations.
· Students and boat captains may not wear apparel that advertises or promotes the sale of fishing products. Participants may wear uniforms with district/school identification/name. Boats may display advertisements and/or graphics.
· Students must stay completely in the boat unless they are using an authorized rest room or they are back at the dock-switching participants.
· Unsportsmanship Conduct – Managers and officials have the strictest instructions to disqualify any participant, coach, boat captain, and/or other person guilty of profane or indecent language or of gross unsportsmanlike conduct. Fines may be levied against disqualified schools. Smoking and alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
· Know what type of tournament you are participating in! Some tournaments will be “paper” tournaments in which the length of the fish are measured and recorded, with the fish being returned to the lake as quickly as possible. In other tournaments, fish may be kept and placed in the live-well to be weighed in at the conclusion of the tournament. In all tournaments, minimum length of fish is 12” and longer to count. Fish may be culled from the live well once 5 fish have been caught.
